Analysis of the zero point vibrational level of infinite polyacetylene along the bond alternation (Peierls) coordinate shows that the zero point average structure has equal bond lengths with no 'degeneracies' necessary for localization. Preparation of this material under conditions where the polymer chains are oriented and isolated may reveal interesting properties. The use of helical channel inclusion complexes (IC) to accomplish this will be described.  One method involves the simultaneous in-situ growth of the IC and polymer via olefin metathesis. Another method involves photopolymerization of (E,E)-1,4-diiodo-1,3-butadiene (1,4-DIBD) in an IC using pulsed 266 nm radiation. The absorption maximum of the ss* A-band excitation of the C-I bond has a maximum near 260 nm.  The 266 nm 4th harmonic of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser provides penetration of the 1,4-DIBD IC and high transient concentrations of cleaved C-I bonds.
