Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) is a good sensor material for its photo stability and near-infrared emission. Crown ethers are well-known for their metal ion sensing with their inherent metal ion selectivity. In this study, we found that with the inclusion of specific alkali metal ions, the reduction potential of the crown-ether functionalized SWNTs can be modified. With the aid of the addition of oxidizing agents, e.g. H2O2, a linear relationship between the concentration of the alkali metal ion and the quenching percentage can be obtained. It is the first time to report the reduction potential modulation of SWNT in terms of the inclusion of a specific alkali metal ion.
