Recent environmental chamber studies have demonstrated that multi-step oxidation products of isoprene contribute significantly to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in the atmosphere. In particular, 2-methyl glyceric acid (2-MG) is postulated to be an important source of SOA via oligomerization reactions (forming polyesters). However, the conditions that might promote efficient, atmospherically relevant SOA formation from 2-MG, such as acid concentration and water content, are not well understood. In order to better determine the parameters that lead to efficient oligomerization of this species, 2-MG has been separately synthesized, and oligomerization kinetic and equilibrium measurements have been performed using an NMR-based analytical technique.
