Molecular architectures based on resorcin[4]arenes and pyrogallol[4]arenes have been studied for over a decade. In particular, pyrogallol[4]arenes have been shown to self-assemble as bilayers, tubes, and dimeric/hexameric capsules. The current study focuses on host-guest interactions between zinc-seamed C-alkylpyrogallol[4]arene (PgCnZn) dimer hosts and guest molecules. Specifically, we report the proton affinity of the host versus the guest and the effect of host protonation on the overall stability and structure of the dimeric framework. We also demonstrate specific cases of proton transfer between host and guest.
