Interfacial Matrix Stabilization Spectroscopy (IMSS) employs energy-dissipating cryogenic matrix isolation techniques combined with FTIR, enabling stabilization and detection of pre-reactive complexes of CO and O2 formed on oxide-supported Au nanoparticles (Au@TiO2, Au@SiO2, Au@Al2O3).  Following deposition of CO and O2 in an argon matrix at 10-20K, annealing to warmer temperatures (28-32K) facilitates diffusion of dopant molecules through matrix to thin film of catalyst where surface-adsorbed, matrix-solvated pre-reactive complexes are observed spectroscopically.  To enhance sensitivity, a copper integrating sphere replaces the transmission sample window.  This creates multiple passes through the matrix deposited on the reflective spherical surface, increasing absorption path length and capturing diffuse and specular reflection components in addition to transmission.  A series of FTIR spectra mapping the evolution of vibrational bands during the annealing process and tracking the various matrix- and surface-bound species formed from interaction of CO and O2 at the catalyst surface will be presented.
