Strong electrostatic adsorption can be employed to optimize bimetallic catalysts for biomass conversion reactions such as glycerol reforming and the hydrogenation of levulinic acid to gamma-valerolactone.  This paper will demonstrate the selective adsorption of cationic platinum tetraammine coordination complexes, [(NH3)4Pt]2+, onto acidic moieties of carbon supported ReO4-.  Characterization by spot EDS analysis and z-contrast imaging shows high metal dispersion and a higher degree of association of Pt and Re than for incipient wetness preparations.  The SEA-based synthesis also yields favorable catalyst reactivity and stability.
