Turbine engines, which burn fossil fuels, are a significant source of particulate and gaseous emissions. Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) (e.g. formaldehyde, benzene, naphthalene and others), associated with aircraft emissions, can have serious health implications and are a potential environmental concern both in flight and at ground level. Effective sampling, identification and quantitation of these trace species from an aircraft engine is challenging but necessary for accurate quantitation. The effort presented here focuses on sampling HAPs from turbine engine exhaust streams using the modified EPA TO-11A and NIOSH/OSHA approved methods and quantifying these selected HAPs. This contribution will be used to describe the analyses employed and present preliminary results from testing a T63 and F117-PW-100 engines using conventional JP-8 and synthetic jet fuels.
