Synthetic jet fuel can be produced from coal via the well-known Fischer-Tropsch process, or by hydrotreating coal liquids derived from carbonization or solvent extraction. Both kinds of fuels have some properties that are close to being, or actually are, out of specification. However, by blending the two, it is possible to produce a single blended fuel that fully meets jet and diesel fuel specifications. For this work, JP-900 fuel produced by hydrogenating coal tar distillates was blended with a Fischer-Tropsch fuel. The resulting blend, called a synthesized kerosene containing aromatics (SKA) fuel, or JS-1, was subjected to 36 standard ASTM tests for jet fuel specifications, and a further 9 ASTM tests for diesel fuel specifications. The testing was done by Panair Laboratory, Miami, Florida. All specifications were met. Properties include boiling range of 156�276� C, 43.1� API gravity, 47� C flash point, �57� C freeze point, 29.5 mm smoke point, heat of combustion of 43.6 MJ/kg. JS-1 contains 0.001% sulfur and 1.1% aromatics. The cetane number is 48.
