Oligomers of the achiral amino acid a-aminoisobutyric acid are known to form 310 helical secondary structures in solution, even at short (n= 6, 8) oligomer lengths.  Additionally, oligomers of this achiral amino acid form racemic mixtures of left- and right-handed helices.  Despite the favorable conformational properties of the a-aminoisobutyric acid residue, the geminal methyl groups reduce peptide-coupling efficiency due to steric hindrance. Recent synthetic (e.g., isotopic enrichment) and spectroscopic (e.g., infrared and nmr) results will be presented.
