Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or coordination polymers (CPs) have been the focus of coordination chemists and material chemists over the past three decades. The most attracting feature in MOF chemistry for us is the possibility to extend the functionality of isolated molecular clusters into three dimensions by connecting them with proper linkers. Our laboratory has been involved in the chemistry of triangular Cu3-pyrazolate (Cu3-pz) clusters that have interesting electrochemical, magnetic and structural properties. We have made MOFs using (Cu3-pz) as secondary building units (SBU) and studied their structural, electrochemical, magnetic and adsorption properties. Using various substituted pyrazoles and bipy-type linkers, we have synthesized Cu3-pyrazolate MOFs with 8-fold and 3-fold interpenetrations. We present here the structural, topological, electrochemical and adsorption analysis of four Cu3-pz MOFs and show how the amount of interpenetration influences adsorption of CO2, N2 and H2.
