Core/shell quantum dot geometries offer the potential to increase photoluminescence quantum yield. To optimize quantum dot emission intensity and wavelength for various applications, a detailed understanding of the nanocrystal structure and properties is desirable. Core/shell II-VI semiconducting nanocrystals are synthesized in a controlled manner, and their structure and properties are investigated. The effect of the shell composition and thickness on photoluminescence is considered, in addition to the collective phenomena between nanocrystals deposited into films. Trends are observed in photoluminescence wavelength and intensity with shell thickness and composition, and contrasts are shown between the properties of isolated nanocrystals and those organized into nanocrystal arrays. By changing the shell composition, the effect of relative band alignment between the core and the shell material is explored. The properties of these core/shell materials have implications in technologies such as light-emitting diodes and photovoltaics.
