In this work, we introduce a seeding-growth approach to control the size of Au nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), resulting in the formation of rGO-Au composites. By using exfoliated graphene oxide nanosheets (GO) as two-dimensional supports, Au molecular precursors were succeeded in selectively arching on the oxygen functionalities, through adding the growth solution, the Au NPs were in situ formed owing to the anticipated seeding-growth process; simultaneously, the GO sheets were reduced to rGO sheets by using NaBH4 in aqueous medium. By adjusting the volume ratios of growth solution to seeds, the size of the absorbed Au NPs can be easily modulated in the range of ~12 nm to ~40 nm in spherical shape. Furthermore, the Raman scattering profile of rGO-Au composites at the excitation of 632.8 nm exhibited our material have the potential application in the areas of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).
