Recent advances in nanosynthesis allow for construction of architecturally complex nanocrystals for use in catalytic applications. The seed-mediated method, for example, is a technique used to achieve greater structural control wherein small nanoparticle seeds are synthesized then used as platforms for additional deposition. Here, the seed-mediated method is coupled with simultaneous reduction of Au and Pd precursors to achieve bimetallic core@shell and/or alloy nanocrystals with spatially controlled metal distributions. Representative structures include symmetrically branched and concave nanocrystals. Optical characterization demonstrates that branched nanocrystals have localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) change as a function of size, are sensitive to changes in refractive index, and can be used as substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) probes. Branched and concave nanocrystals have been examined for use in catalytic applications. These properties demonstrate the multifunctional nature of branched and concave bimetallic nanocrystals for applications such as the monitoring of catalytic reactions with SERS.
