Virus-like nanoparticles (VNPs) with superparamagnetic iron oxide cores attract considerable attention as promising candidates for MRI imaging and hyperthermia treatment. In this talk we will describe synthesis of monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles and their functionalization with PEG modified alternating copolymers. We demonstrated that these nanoparticles display excellent MRI response as a T2-weighted MRI contrast agent, surpassing commercially available MRI agents. The iron oxide cores are successfully enveloped by both Brome Mosaic virus and Hepatitis B virus proteins leading to monodisperse VNPs, the characteristics of which depend on the length and the amount of the PEG tails attached. Synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy allowed structural characterization of these VNPs.
