High surface area polymers have numerous applications as substrates for adsorbents for gas capture and storage and as membranes for separation. Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIMs) are a class of materials which have rigid contorted backbones promoting inefficient packing to achieve high surface area. Semi-rigid stilbene and styrenic alternating copolymers synthesized in our group have been found to have surface area over 40 m2/g. A linear relationship between persistence length and BET surface area was observed. We also incorporated these alternating copolymers into Davankov-type hypercrosslinked networks to achieve high rigidity, high surface areas and good thermal stability. Hypercrosslinked copolymers containing 3-methyl N-phenyl maleimide and 4-methyl stilbene have BET surface area up to 1000 m2/g and good thermal stability.
