Coumarin-based sensors were designed and synthesized to selectively bind and visualize the catecholamines norepinephrine and dopamine in fixed and live cells. The main issues addressed were obtaining the necessary selectivity between various cellular amines and overcoming the natural tendencies of catecholamines to quench fluorescence. A sensor that provides an intense fluorescent response to norepinephrine and dopamine at 525 nm upon excitation at 488 nm will be presented.
