High speed ball milling (HSBM) works by oscillating reaction vials containing reactants until the desired product is formed. This 'green' method reduces solvent waste, creates less hazardous organic syntheses. Our research is to demonstrate that a metal vial could be used in place of a traditional metal catalyst. To test this hypothesis we examined �click� reactions under HSBM conditions in a copper vial against the same reactions conducted in solution. Under solvent-free conditions click reactions could be performed in one step using only our copper vial. We have synthesized a number of 1,2,3-triazoles via the �click reaction� with a copper reaction vial. This supports our hypothesis that the reaction vessel itself can catalyze the reactions under solvent and ligand free conditions. Our one-pot, one-step approach has made this reaction safer, cleaner and more environmentally benign. We will expand this research and investigate other metal catalyst including nickel and palladium.
