Methodology achieving the activation and functionalization of carbon-carbon single bonds holds the promise to unveil previously unforeseen retrosynthetic disconnects.  This presentation will outline ongoing mechanistic investigations of existing rhodium- and palladium-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond activation methodologies, including those pioneered by Douglas, Miura and Jun.  These investigations have yielded quantitative insight into the process of carbon-carbon bond cleavage through both oxidative addition and �-elimination processes, and allow the comparison and contrast of these distinct reaction pathways.  Results from these studies promise to guide the development of new methodologies.
