The solution-phase synthesis of nanoparticles with controlled size and morphology has generated much interest in recent years due to their excellent properties, which allow for their applicability in many fields, including catalysis.  Significant progress has been made in the development of catalytic nanoscale materials; however, there have been very limited studies into reaction methodologies for these syntheses that take into account the myriad of experimental variables available for tuning the physical and chemical characteristics of the product.  Here we present a thorough analysis of the synthetic levers available in the polyol-mediated production of rhodium nanoparticles, and then apply these principles to the controlled synthesis of other catalytically-active metal systems.  Further, we analyze the formation process for numerous morphologies and compositions before expounding a generalized formation mechanism in the synthesis of colloidal noble metal nanoparticles.
