It is well known that the performance of heterogeneous catalysts can be enhanced by nanostructuring.  This can include simple factors such as increased accessible surface area, as well as more advanced factors such as the effects of size and shape on catalytic activity and selectivity and the ability to introduce synergistic interactions by forming nanoscale interfaces and heterostructures.  Our group has been developing a toolbox of synthetic reactions that directly impacts our ability to design advanced catalytic nanostructures, including methods to influence size and shape in metal nanoparticle systems, to access new and non-equilibrium alloy and intermetallic phases as nanoparticles, and to generate novel nanostructured support materials.  Most recently, we have developed tools for synthesizing hybrid nanoparticle systems that provide new opportunities for controlling hetero-interfaces and the relative spatial orientations of multiple catalytic particles.  This talk will highlight our recent efforts in these areas.
