Tandem catalysis can involve multiple catalytic transformations in a single reaction vessel, generating less waste and minimizing the handling processes in multistep catalytic reactions, while increasing significantly molecular complexity. Although large numbers of tandem catalytic reactions have recently been developed, most of them are homogeneous catalytic reactions, in which recycling of the catalysts is difficult. Therefore, the development of recoverable supported catalysts, which capapble of catalyzing mechanistically distinct reactions without interference each other, would make the tandem catalytic reactions to be more sustainable, and highly desirable. Despite the advantage of this strategy, only few tandem catalytic reactions with combined use of different types of heterogeneous catalysts have been reported, which probably due to the limited compatibility between catalysts, solvents, and concomitant products in multistep reaction conditions. Herein we present our recent results on the development of supported palladium and ruthenium catalysts onto the same support materials, which could allow sequential catalytic reactions of metathesis and hydrogenation.
