Transition metal catalysis experimentation has traditionally been an expensive endeavor that requires significant amounts of valuable materials, time for set-up and analysis of results. Identifying optimal conditions for challenging reactions requires evaluation of a number of variables, including the catalyst, solvent, temperature, time, stoichiometry, and additive effects. When these reaction parameters are combined, the number of experiments necessary becomes very large. With recent advances in microscale reaction engineering and in rapid high-throughput analytical tools, the cost of running an experiment has decreased tremendously and the prospect of efficiently generating substrate-specific conditions is becoming a reality. In this work we describe the use of high throughput experimentation to find suitable conditions for the direct alpha-arylation of sulfoxides and for the synthesis of triarylmethanes via a deprotonative-cross-coupling process.
