PPh3 is among the most common supporting ligands used in cationic gold(I) p-activation catalysis, but little is known about how this weakly electron donating ligand affects the nature of proposed catalytic intermediates.  We have synthesized a series of [(Ph3P)Au+(p-ligand)]+ X- complexes of alkenes, alkynes, and allenes and characterized them in solution using low temperature NMR.  The p-ligands in these complexes are remarkably labile, undergoing rapid exchange and displacement by weakly coordinating X- at -90 �C and decomposition above -20 �C.
