It has been hypothesized that alternating sulfur and aromatic side-chains in redox proteins may provide a conduit for electron-transfer. In addition, phenyl side-chains of phenylalanine may be close to the thioether side-chain of Met-35 in �-amyloid peptides and this may have consequences for the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. To provide definitive chemical evidence for the feasibility of these conjectures model S-t-Bu m-terphenyl thioethers, such as that shown below, have been synthesized by novel Suzuki coupling and their redox properties studied electrochemically.
