Cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs) exhibit high strength and modulus and are more eco-friendly compared to man-made fibers such as glass fibers and carbon fibers. Because of these advantages, CNWs have attracted intensive research interests as a reinforcement material in polymer composites. In this presentation we will discuss the results we obtained from poly-3-hydroxy butyrate-co-valerate (PHBV)/CNWs composites, e.g., the effects of CNWs on mechanical, viscoelastic and dielectric properties and crystallization behavior of PHBV, the control of CNW orientation in the PHBV matrix, and the effects of CNW concentration and orientation on the properties of the composites. We will also discuss our most recent results about using CNWs and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) to reinforce electrospun polyethylene oxide (PEO) nanofibers. The effects of CNWs and CNFs on the electrospinning process and the structures and properties of PEO nanofiber mats will be demonstrated.
