The US Army seeks to create a new paradigm of advanced materials development leading to leap-ahead capability for the United States. In 2012, the US Army will announce two large, multi-year Cooperative Research Alliances (CRA). These CRAs will couple multi-scale computational techniques, advanced characterizations, and unprecedented processing control and synthesis leading to significantly increase materials knowledge and ultimately advanced materials and capabilities.  These CRAs in conjunction with a robust internal mission program, will provide an optimum path to transformational materials. The Materials in Extreme Dynamic Environments (MEDE) CRA seeks to develop the capability to realize a 'Materials by Design' capability to design, optimize, and fabricate lightweight protection material systems exhibiting revolutionary performance. The Multi-Scale Multidisciplinary Modeling of Electronic Materials (MSME) CRA will develop quantitative understanding of materials from the smallest to the largest relevant scales to advance the state of the art in electronic, optoelectronic and electrochemical materials and devices.
