 Covalent organic frameworks represent an emerging class of porous, crystalline materials that form two-dimensional layered structures or three-dimensional networks. Comparatively few 3D COFs have been crystallized, and despite exhibiting exceptionally high surface areas and record low densities, these networks have no well-developed applications. Functionalizing their interior might harness these properties to provide structurally precise platforms for catalysis, separations, or the release of molecular payloads. Here, we report a general approach to functionalize 3D COFs using a monomer truncation strategy.
