This presentation will focus on the use of a high performance ion mobility spectrometer (HPIMS) as a standalone in-situ analytical system and the potential for using HPIMS in multiple applications where portability, speed, and high separation efficiency are required including food safety and security. In chemical and pharmaceutical applications, the significant development of a commercial electrospray ionization (ESI) source enables the HPIMS system to replace HPLC in applications such as reaction monitoring, cleaning verification, and other analyses in manufacturing and quality control. In addition, the potential of the HPIMS for on-site detection of common banned food additives will be demonstrated. The presentation will also review our most recent developments in achieving selective separated by using chemical modifiers in the ion mobility drift gas. A standalone HPIMS system provides high resolution, sensitivity, and analysis speed with exceptional portability and low operational cost making it an ideal instrument for field analytical chemistry.
