Examples of tetravalent rare earth compounds have been limited to cerium (Eox = +1.3 V vs Fc) due to the high oxidation potentials for the trans-cerium lanthanides: terbium (2.7 V), praseodymium (2.8 V), and neodymium (4.6 V). We have applied a rare earth/metal/1,1'-BINOLate (REMB; M = Li) heterobimetallic framework to synthesize several early rare earth derivatives to explore their oxidation chemistry with a redox active ligand (1,4-Benzoquinone).  A series of quinone-bridged dimers (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd) were synthesized, and their oxidation states were probed using various physical inorganic techniques.  The unique properties and coordination preferences of the heterobimetallic frameworks will be discussed as a design strategy for trans-cerium rare earth oxidation chemistry.
