Important advances were made in studies of nuclear reaction mechanisms in two very different energy regimes in the late 1970's.  The long sought after fusion reaction of 48Ca + 248Cm was carried out at the LBL SuperHILAC with the disappointing results that the products, if present, were below detection thresholds.  It took more than 25 years to develop techniques sensitive enough to properly explore this reaction.  At nearly the same time in the 1970's, the fragmentation of a variety of heavy ion beams at relativistic energies by various targets was carried out for the first time at the LBL BEVALAC.  These studies laid the ground work for the development of the so-called radioactive beam facilities around the world.  A brief overview of the exciting studies of these ground-breaking reactions by the Seaborg group will be presented.
