We will discuss how controlling the local lattice strain at the dopant site in doped core/shell nanocrystals can be used as a new way of tuning their photophysical property. In particular, the effect of local lattice strain near the core/shell hetero interface on the energy transfer dynamics between the exciton and dopant (Mn2+) and vibronic coupling of dopant luminescence will be discussed. The local lattice strain near CdS/ZnS core/shell interface induces the softening of the local phonon mode in the shell near the dopant ions changing the reorganization energy. The strain also increases the difference in the frequency of the phonon mode coupled to the dopant luminescence in the ground and excited states of Mn2+ion. Such effects of lattice strain is manifested as a large temperature-dependent energetics of Mn2+ ion and the dynamics of the energy transfer between exciton and Mn2+ ion.
