Ionic liquids (ILs) have drawn considerable attention due to their numerous favorable properties such as negligible vapor pressures, wide electrochemical window, and high thermal stability.1 Of specific interest in recent times has been the application of ILs in post-combustion CO2 capture.2-12 There are numerous physiochemical properties which govern both solubility and permeability of gases within ILs, including free volume, viscosity, and cation-anion interactions. These properties can readily be adapted as needed given the ease of modulation for both the cation and anion within ILs. Herein we report the synthesis, characterization, and results of a series of task-spefic ILs with respect to gas separation applications. The ILs were shown to reversibly bind CO2 in addition to showing favourable CO2/N2 selectivity when impregnated on membrane systems.
