Single crystal TiO2 structures were grown using titanium oxysulfate hydrate and dilute hydrofluoric acid under high temperature and pressure. Silver nanostructures were grown on the single crystal using UV light. Our results of photoreduction of silver ions suggested that the 010 surface of the single crystal is the preferred growth site due to possible defects along the surface. Single crystal TiO2 was doped with nitrogen, using an ammonia argon gas mixture in a tube furnace. The resultant nitrogen doped single crystal TiO2 also had silver nanostructures photochemically deposited from a silver nitrate solution using visible light, thus demonstrating the nitrogen doping effect. Both the doped and un-doped samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy while on an indexed cover slip in order to determine the relationship of silver nanoparticle geometry and growth to their surface Plasmon effects and Raman enhancement capability.
