Electrical conductivity of covalent polymers including metal-organic frameworks has attracted particular interest in the research community for their potential application in energy storage and sensing. Although the search of this property is still scarce the tendency is reversing. Herein, I will present the design and characterization of metal-organic frameworks with an electrically conductive organic backbone (EMOFs) that potentially provide a mean for changing the oxidation state of the transition metal/conductive organic ligand pairs (Mn+/COLm-) that make up each structural building unit in the material. Under sufficient applied potential, electrons conducted through the EMOF backbone would induce an oxidation state shift in the transition metal, COL, or both. That oxidation state shift could theoretically be exploited in several ways to electrically switch the adsorption affinity of the EMOF.
