Cowpea chlorotic mottle virus (CCMV) is a native plant virus that exhibits reversible assembly and disassembly that is controllable by pH and ionic strength. Devoid of its native RNA, CCMV can be loaded with non-nucleotidal cargo including small organic molecules, enzymes, polymers and proteins. In this work, we have developed strategies to selectively load proteins of interest inside CCMV to form stable virus-like assemblies. Here, I will discuss recent developments, which extend towards the rational design and quantitative loading of fluorescent proteins inside virus-like particles.
