Luminescent complexes of the f-block metals are increasingly used for detection in biological systems. However, the design and assembly of new probes is not straightforward. We discuss two strategies for the construction of analyte-responsive lanthanide-based luminescent probes. The synthesis and detailed photophysical characterization of a series of complexes are presented, along with their applications for the detection of analytes ranging from small molecular weight species to enzymes.
