A critical challenge that exists for the field of organic synthesis is building large collections of diverse compounds for use as biological probes or in medicinal chemistry.  Toward this end, we will discuss several efficient and general synthetic approaches to distinct molecular skeletons using diversity-oriented synthesis (DOS) strategies.  The first part of the seminar will outline the development of intramolecular ring-opening/Friedel-Crafts cyclizations of cyclopropanes, cyclopropenes and epoxides for the generation of functionalized six-membered rings.  The second part will focus on novel intramolecular Friedel-Crafts cyclizations of alkylidene beta-amidoesters for the synthesis of N-fused heterocycles.  The final part will showcase some specific applications of the methods for the synthesis of biologically-relevant molecules and natural products.
