Potassium fluoride on alumina (KF/Al2O3) is a versatile, commercially available heterogeneous base that has been used for three decades for variety of synthetic transformations.[1]  Diaryl ethers can be prepared by SNAr reaction using KF/Al2O3 in refluxing DMSO in the presence of crown-ethers.[2]  We investigated this reaction under solvent-free conditions and found: 1) an appreciable rate enhancement, and 2) the hydrolysis of aryl nitrile moieties to benzamides (a reaction not observed in solution).
