A series of 6,6'-di(benzofuran-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine derivatives were prepared by efficient annulations of o-ethynylphenol under mild conditions, and its photophysical studies were investigated. Benzofuran fragments play important roles in providing a rigid skeleton as well as in emitting visible light with high quantum yield in organic solvents. The incorporation with 2,2'-bipyridine bridge where benzofuran fluorophores were connected on 6 and 6'-position of bipyridine allows us to observe dynamic behaviors upon metal coordination in absorption and emission spectra. Especially, when electron rich and deficient substitution were asymmetrically employed on the benzofuran fragments, the characteristic intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) interactions through the p-conjugation were monitored in both UV-vis and fluorescent spectra. Its intrinsic sensitivity of charge-separated excitation states to local environments enables to further conduct ICT-type behaviors prior to and after the exposure to metal ions in various solvent conditions.
