The general applicability of stem cell tissue engineering is hindered, in part, by the poor understanding of cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions. Combinatorial methods may offer a practical solution to sorting through the complexity of ECM microenvironment by efficiently and precisely surveying a wide range of ligands which can be correlated spatially to the cell response.  This approach offers the chance to gather a wealth of information in a short time and plot a comprehensive picture of ligand interactions, threshold concentrations and cell response.
