Metal organic frameworks are a recently developed class of materials that are formed via coordination between metal centers and organic linkers. Particularly, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a class of metal organic frameworks that are formed via coordination between metal centers and organic imidazole/imidazolate linkers and are known to possess permanent porosity and have high chemical and thermal stability when compared to most MOF materials. ZIFs have been explored as alternates to zeolites as fillers in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). ZIFs have several advantages over zeolites that make their inclusion into polymer matrices attractive. Due to the organic nature of the ZIFs, the ZIF particles do not require surface modification in order to achieve satisfactory adhesion to the polymer matrix. Here, we show that unlike traditional zeolite materials, ZIF-8 does not have a definitive CO2 permeability; rather, the polymer matrix strongly affects the mass transport of CO2 through the ZIF-8.
