A method for the quantification of aqueous iodine species is presented and utilized in the characterization of the redox and sorption behavior of aqueous iodide (I-) in the presence of hausmannite.  The method quantifies aqueous iodine species as I2, I-, and IO3-.  The method utilizes solid phase extraction disks, liquid scintillation counting, and scintillating anion exchange resin.  Nearly quantitative results were found for standardized single-species samples of I2 (92%), I- (102%), and IO3- (91%), respectively.  Consistent measurements were obtained for multi-species samples using the method.  The method was applied to an investigation of the redox and sorption behavior of aqueous I- in the presence of hausmannite.  Batch studies were completed with 129I (as I-) over a range of pH values and contact times.  Highly pH-dependent oxidation of I- to IO3- was observed through an I2 intermediate.  The data was used to model the kinetics of the observed oxidation and sorption.
