Very recently, we reported a novel visible-light-sensitive Cu(II)-grafted TiO2 photocatalysts and demonstrated that photocatalytic oxidative decomposition could be initiated by interfacial charge transfer (IFCT) from the valence band (VB) of TiO2 to grafted Cu(II) ions, forming Cu(I). The holes produced in the VB are then capable of decomposing organic substances. The reduction reaction possibly proceeds by multi-electron oxygen reduction process. This result enabled us to control the conduction band (CB) control of TiO2 to gain visible light sensitivity with the aid of multi-electron oxygen reduction process. Based on these considerations, we designed novel-doped TiO2 photocatalyst sensitive to visible light, namely Cu(II)-grafted W and Ga-codoped TiO2. W6+ substituted at Ti4+ sites contributed to the electronic structure of the CB of TiO2, leading to band-gap narrowing. In contrast, Ga3+ acted as a counter dopant to maintain the charge neutrality. The prepared photocatalysts decomposed 2-propanol into CO2 very efficiently under visible light.
