Dual-phase of anatase and brookite TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method with titanium sulfide (TiS2) as the precursors in alkaline solutions. With 1 molL-1 of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), mixture of anatase and brookite nanoparticles were synthesized whereas with lower concentration of 0.5 molL-1 of NaOH, only anatase nanoparticles were obtained. Pure brookite nanoplates were obtained with further increase of NaOH concentration to 1.2 molL-1. Photocatalytic activities of the as-synthesized anatase/brookite mixture, pure anatase nanoparticles and pure brookite nanoflakes were appraised via photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from aqueous methanol solution. Results have shown that the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was higher for the anatase/brookite mixture and brookite nanoplates as compared to pure anatase nanoparticles despite higher surface area of the anatase nanoparticles. This is attributed to the more cathodic conduction band edge of the brookite phase than anatase phase which was evidenced by Mott-Schottky plots.
