We present recent progress on the development of several new nanostructured metal oxides as semiconductor nanocatalysts for photocatalytic conversion of CO2 and H2O into CH4 and other valuable chemicals. Among metal oxides, Cu2O films have exhibited high selectivity and activity in converting CO2 and H2O into methane under visible solar light radiation, as a result of its narrow band gap energy. In addition, some new results on the formation of formic acid from CO2 and H2O using various metal oxide nanocatalysts and related structures will also be presented. Important issues associated with the energy efficiency and long-term stability of the photocatalytic reactor will also be discussed.
