Hydrogen evolution from water by harnessing clean and abundant solar energy depicts a blue print for a solution regarding current global energy crisis and environmental issues. A myriad of semiconductors have been reported for their ability to split water under UV light irradiation. It is well known that UV light constitutes less than 5% of the solar spectrum. Compared with UV light, visible light contains ~ 45% of the solar energy. Therefore, the development of efficient visible light absorbing photocatalysts is important to effectively utilize solar energy. A number of visible light absorbing semiconductor photocatalysts have been developed.3 Among them, CdS, has attracted significant amount of attention for photocatalytic applications. However, the long term use of CdS in photocatalytic condition is tremendously restricted by its tendency to undergo photocorrosion. In the current work, we have attempted to fabricate a visible light driven photocatalyst composed of CdS incorporated Ti-MCM-48 mesoporous materials.
