Heteratomic organic reactants and poisons are important molecules in the catalytic processing of fossil fuels, bio-fuels, and commodity chemicals. When adsorbed on transitional metal catalysts, these molecules are known to alter the catalytic properties and to induce structural changes in transition metal-based catalysts. In this contribution, the effect of particle size and bimetallic composition for supported transition metal-based catalysts on the conversion and poisoning of heteroatom organics will be discussed. The primary focus will be on sulfur- and nitrogen containing organics and the role of size and composition in supported Pt-based particles. The results will demonstrate size-dependent poisoning and strategies for improving catalytic properties using bimetallic catalysts.
