We have developed an analytical and modeling protocol that allows us to construct a model of composition that is consistent with all the analytical information available for heavy oil.  We first do separations on the heavy oil.  These separated fractions are then subjected to FDMS (Field-Desorption Mass Spectrometry) for a molecular weight profile and to high resolution FTICR-MS (Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry) for chemical type analysis. An additional experiment allows the determination of a set of building blocks which leads to a library of possible molecules that are seen in the FTICR-MS.  To get the final model of composition, we take the set of molecules consistent with the FDMS and FTICR-MS results along with their abundances and reconcile these abundances with the properties that have been measured for the resid. This yields a model of composition consistent with the measured properties as well as with the mass spectrometry data.
