The processes of heme degradation by either the enzyme heme oxygenase or the chemical process of coupled oxidation produce a number of detectable and sometimes isolable intermediates.  These intermediates have been studied by a combination of synthetic studies, paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.  Key comparisons between the two processes will be drawn.
