Efficient, low-cost, and scalable methods for the synthesis and purification of nanomaterials are of importance for the applications of nanomaterials in a variety of technologies. In this talk, we will first focus on the fast and reproducible synthesis of high quality nanocrystals by microwave heating. The correlation of the size and optoelectronic properties of nanocrystals with reaction conditions will be discussed. Secondly, we will discuss a new nanoparticle purification method based on electrophoretic deposition. Using a variety of materials such as CdTe, PbSe, and CdSe with different size, shape, composition, and ligand environment as examples, we will demonstrate that in as little as a couple of minutes, these nanoparticles can be effectively purified directly from the as-synthesized reaction solution using a simple lab-scale setup.
